4 tips for moving into a retirement home – Royal Examiner

It is an ancient technique that is suitable for beginners or experts in embroidery. The perforated needle technique is ideal for art projects or embellishments on pillows or other objects.

The great thing about a punch needle is that the needle itself is large. The maker does not need to hold a small needle or use a magnifying glass to see the stitches. The punch holds like a pencil and has a large threading hole, making it easy to get started. You can use a piece of thread or a threading tool to make it work.

This type of punch needle is very similar to rug hooking. However, in punch needling, the needle pushes a loop down into the fabric, instead of pulling it up as in rug hooking.

You will need a drawing (you could even make one yourself) and a tracing template, heavy yarn or carpet yarn, an awl needle, monk’s cloth and an embroidery frame.

If you’re a beginner, you might consider a complete beginner’s kit with all the necessary supplies, including the needle. Complete kits cost around $20 to $40.

If you have all the supplies you need, you can find free patterns for punch needle projects online.

Luckily, if you don’t have any experience but want to start a project, you can see entire project videos on YouTube.

Like any project you are unfamiliar with, there will be difficulties getting started.

Among the things you should pay attention to:

  • Be sure to pull the fabric as tight as possible over the hoop. Remember to use a screwdriver to close the hoop tightly. If the fabric is not tight enough, you will have loose loops and stitches.
  • Keep about a foot of slack in the yarn and relax as you go. Never lean on the slack line.
  • Be sure to hit the needle all the way to the handle of each stitch, otherwise you risk getting uneven curls.
