Governors should not have pension benefits

Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said state governors should not receive any pension benefits after leaving office.

He said that governors have come to serve the people and they should go home when they are done serving the people.

Obi revealed that he has never received a salary or pension since he stepped down as governor of Anambra State eight years ago.

He made the revelation during an event on Saturday in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

He said, “Since I left office eight years ago, I have never received a pension. Anambra state never bought me pure water because governors shouldn’t have pension packages.

“You came to serve and when you are done you should go home. God has blessed you enough. Whatever power God has given you is by grace. Do not abuse God’s grace. We must stop abusing God’s grace in this country and use public funds to serve the people.

Obi said that upon leaving office, he invited the chief executives of three banks where state funds were kept for the next administration and publicly handed them over to his successor.

When I was stepping down as Governor of Anambra, I invited the Managing Director of Access Bank, Diamond Bank and Fidelity Bank, and told them publicly that the balance of Anambra State Money that I kept in each of these banks was $50 million and N12 billion. each. They confirmed it publicly and I told them to give it to my successor to use and develop the state.

“Nobody asked me to save money, but it’s a public fund that doesn’t belong to me. I needed to use it to work for people.

Obi said Nigeria had to move from a consumer country to a producer country if it was to survive.
