McCarthy Stone plans to build a new retirement home in Ledbury town center

McCarthy Stone, who runs dozens of nursing homes across the country, wants to develop land off The Homend and will soon start consulting on its plans.

The land earmarked for the development is described as being north of Tesco, opposite Knapp Lane.

McCarthy Stone says it has written to neighbors close to the site and is talking to city and county councilors about its initial plans.

In the coming weeks, the developer will also launch a virtual consultation for the wider community to view and comment on the program.

Kate Fisher, Managing Director of the Midlands Division of McCarthy Stone, said: “We are keen to develop a program that contributes positively to the local community through attractive, high quality design.

“We will therefore involve the local community throughout the planning application process, as we believe it is essential that local people have the opportunity to give their opinion.”

A spokesperson said it could still take a few months to submit a development application, but the company was keen to engage with residents beforehand in a non-statutory consultation.

At present, the project is still in its early stages – there are no set plans for how many units could be built and no artists’ impression of what the development might look like.

McCarthy Stone believes there is a local need for this type of accommodation in the Ledbury area.

“Retirement apartments would allow occupiers looking to ease the burden of maintaining a large property, the opportunity to downsize, freeing up larger family homes to market,” he said.

Details of the next virtual public exhibition will be made public in the coming weeks, but anyone wanting more information can call the project’s free information line on 0800 298 7040 or email feedback@mccarthystoneconsultation

Among McCarthy Stone’s previous developments, a retirement home in Hereford opened in 2019.

William Grange in Friars Street has 54 luxury one and two bedroom apartments available exclusively for the over 60s.
